The last day of Garfield Park Conservatory's Spring Seedling Sale is Saturday, May 21, from 9:30 AM-3:30 PM at their Bluestone Terrace. Seedlings include heirloom tomatoes, corn, beans, squash, tomatillos and peppers; proceeds benefit the programs of the Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance.
The Green City Market continues to run Saturdays and Wednesdays at the south end of Lincoln Park, 7 AM-1 PM. If you can schedule your visit at 10:30 there will be cooking demos using market produce by local chefs. Saturday, May 21, 10:30 AM will feature pastry chef Melissa Trimmer of C House; Mark Steuer of the Bedford is on for Wednesday, May 25.
The Chicago Botanic Gardens in Glencoe offer summer-long chef demos on Saturdays and Sundays at 1:30 and 2:30 PM in their Regenstein Fruit & Vegetable Garden open-air amphitheater. The Saturday, May 21, demo features Michael Kingsley of the Garden Cafe at the Chicago Botanic Garden; on Sunday May 22, Dave Esau of Dave’s Specialty Foods will present a recipe. While you're up there take advantage of the gardens' seed giveaway from 11 AM-4 PM. This month they're featuring Honey Bear acorn squash; each packet's labeled with care information and a recipe. The events are free but parking is a bit steep at $20 per car. Alternative commutes are taking the bike paths north through the city's forest preserves (there are bike racks at the gardens) or Metra—a $2 trolley runs on Sundays from the Glencoe Metra Station. or you can walk the mile or so from the Braeside Metra Station.
The Arboretum of South Barrington is teaming up with Green Grocer Chicago to bring a produce market to the open-air shopping and entertainment center. GGC has partnerships with more than 20 midwestern farmers and producers and will be be selling locally grown, organic, and seasonal fruits, vegetable, flowers and more in this new location on weekends, starting Saturday and Sunday, May 21-22, 10 AM-3 PM.
