Despite, because of, and who the hell knows why

The human mind has taken great strides over the centuries. Distinctions that once honored the intellect subtle enough to make them have become tedious commonplaces. There was a time, believe it or not, when the construction "despite (or possibly because of)" was fresh, and marked the user as a nimble thinker and an ironist. Today it's simply tired, pretentious, and annoying. Rather than numb you with examples I'll send you to the Google site where, if you have nothing better to do, you can browse through 52,000 of them.

What to do? We have a choice: Get rid of "Despite (or possibly because of)" or find a way to say it in one word.

I don't know what that word is, or might be, but let's get to work on one. We've conflated alternatives before. We don't say "sickly blue, or is it green?" any longer. We say "teal."
