Each week we ask you to show us something. This week it's Ron Shore's METAL DETECTOR FINDS. Got something to show us? showus@chicagoreader.com
Ron Shore has been searching for stuff with metal detectors since the late 70s, when his wife bought him his first one as a birthday gift. "I didn't even know what they were," he says. "I went out, found a few silver coins, and got hooked."
A few years later he launched Windy City Metal Detector, which sells and rents the devices, and has been running the business out of his home ever since.
His finds include a four-and-a-half-ounce gold nugget bracelet, a gold muscle-man pin, and a knife with "Army Patrol 1916" engraved on it. Possibly his favorite, though, is a gas gauge from a very old car—from the 20s or 30s, he estimates.
