Tristan Hummel, the force behind this weekend's Built Festival
(and the CTA "Art on Track" shows), bought his own 20-foot shipping container on Craigslist and shelled out a couple grand for it. The rest of the sixteen "curated" containers, including ten 40-footers, that he says will be in the festival's Shipping Container Art Show are rented or borrowed. Hummel figures to cover about 80 percent of the cost of that and other festival expenses with corporate sponsorships, and is counting on admission fees for the rest. No grants involved.
"I'm kind of proud of the sacrifices I've made for the art world," he told me. SAIC-honed 3D animation skills keep him from starving, but "this project costs more than I've made for the last three years." He also promises one hundred artists, showing their stuff, plus food, drink, music.
It's at 1767 N. Milwaukee Ave., 5:00 PM to 10:30 PM tonight (8/12), and 11 AM to 10:30 PM tomorrow (8/13). Admission is $10.
