There is no official Reader policy stating that people who read our blogs and check out the paper's online features are better than the ones who only pick up the print edition, but if you look at the direction that publishing's taking and the rapidly increasing weight advertisers put on online numbers you could be forgiven for (wink wink) "thinking" that you're "more important" and "literally more valuable" than IRL-onlys. So for you guys, something special: a free compilation of music from the Chicago-born Permanent Records label, embedded in the profile I did on the label, the record store that birthed it, and the couple behind both. This week I also reviewed the new record by R&B tastemaker the Weeknd, which I didn't like as much as the first but which you can also download free (the link's in the review). This week's Artist on Artist pairs NYC jazz pianist Craig Taborn and Chicago jazz pianist Rob Clearfield for a conversation about jazz piano and avant-garde black metal. Gossip Wolf lets you know to look out for records from Mike Reed's Myth/Science Assembly and Magical Beautiful, as well as providing probably this year's best pick for a Grand Funk Railroad show. And the Soundboard's got non-Grand-Funk shows by Black Moth Super Rainbow, Fruit Bats, Natural Child, Doro, O'Death, Chris Thile & Michael Daves, and more.
