Denim to die for

Sandblasted jeans aren't just a crime against fashion—they're a potential crime against workers' health. As outlined in this BBC article, the process of sandblasting jeans can cause silicosis, a debilitating and sometimes fatal lung disease caused by the inhalation of tiny pieces of silica dust, in workers. While silicosis has been prevalent in construction and mining workers, it's a relatively new phenomenon within the garment industry, and its sudden prevalence is troubling to experts. Levi's and H&M have banned sandblasting of their own denim, and there are other methods of distressing jeans, but retailers may not have the resources to investigate and verify that their manufacturers are using them. One solution? Stop buying them. Dark denim is so much more chic anyway.
