Ben Sachs weighs in on The Thing, which opened yesterday without press previews: "This purports to be a prequel to John Carpenter’s beloved sci-fi horror film (itself a reworking of the 1951 classic by Howard Hawks), though it recycles so much from Carpenter that it can only be labeled an imitation. It’s sincere in that regard, particularly in its claustrophobic widescreen framing and creatively icky special effects. But director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., a veteran of TV commercials, fails to replicate Carpenter’s blue-collar humor or carefully modulated suspense. The largely forgettable cast includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton." Click here for venues and showtimes.
