The Chicago Humanities Festival's fifth annual Festival Day in Hyde Park is Sunday, October 23, serving as sort of a lead-in to the festival proper, which begins November 2 and runs through November 13. This year's theme is technology (or as they style it, tech•knowledge.

Sunday's programs include talks on pirate radio, Tokyo's communter trains, the rise and fall of biodiversity, recycling in Africa, the history of the telescope, and more, as well as novelist Amitav Ghosh reading from his latest book, River of Smoke. Individual events run $5 to $15.
