I do believe Ron Washington's motivational clubhouse talk before game seven of the World Series will make him a folk hero for the ages. But I wonder about the reliability of Gordon Wittenmyer's transcription of his interview with Washington, about Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux (brother of Greg), a top candidate for the Cubs' managerial slot. Here's what I imagine him saying [from today's Sun-Times].
He cares about what he's doing, and he cares about the people that he's doing it with. He does a great job of hands-on. He does a good job of directing motherfuckers and helping them find their way. I think that type of quality is what has separated him from other cocksuckers who have done his job as pitching coach.
Since I've been with him, he certainly has a program for all his pitchers. . . . Every day he makes those fuckers accountable for making sure they're prepared and for what may happen in the course of the motherfucking ballgame. I haven't seen many guys that decipher things and get prepared as much as Mike. Dude's a motherfucker.
