When you're a critic, somebody always hates you. Just the other day I got into a big, bloated online argument with some burlesque fans who took umbrage at my insensitive, reactionary, misogynistic, ignorant, insufficiently awestruck review of Temple of Boobs. These people were really pissed off. It'd be awful if they should happen to find out that I'll be at the Chicago Book Expo this weekend, moderating a Reader-sponsored panel called "The Playwright as Writer." Word of that gets around, they'll be sure to show up—and then I'm toast.

Though if they do somehow manage to track me down, I hope they'll at least wait until after the panel to accost me, since we're going to have a great discussion about why it is that playwrights aren't regarded as part of the literary community the way, say, fiction writers and poets are. The participants are novelist/playwright Joe Meno, playwright Marisa Wegrzyn, Neo-Futurists founder Greg Allen, and Tanya Palmer, who directs new play development at the Goodman Theatre.

It's Saturday, 11/19—that's tomorrow—2 PM, at the former Uptown Borders store, 4720 N. Broadway. But keep that to yourself. Is this mike on?
