Every winter WHPK, the University of Chicago radio station, presents a cool program called Pictures and Sounds, which enlists experimental and noise musicians to create real-time original soundtracks to avant-garde films and videos. The program for this year's installment, which is Sat 3/3, hasn't been announced yet, but this week the station is launching another music-and-film effort with broader appeal, a series called Roxploitation: Subculture on Film. It runs every Thursday through March 8 at Doc Films, with screenings starting at between 9 and 9:45 PM. Roxploitation opens tomorrow night with the classic 1964 Richard Lester film with the Beatles, A Hard Day's Night.

What links all the films in the series is the prominent role of a different musical subculture in the plot of each one, from the reggae in The Harder They Come (which screens Thu 1/26 at 9:45 PM) or the SoCal new wave scene in Valley Girl (screening Thu 2/16 at 9:45 PM). Other entries include Rock 'n' Roll High School, featuring the Ramones, and the psychedelic Roger Corman flick The Trip. Check out the complete schedule for more.

Today's playlist:

Billy Bang, Prayer for Peace (TUM)
Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs, Foggy Mountain Jamboree (Columbia/Legacy)
Al Cohn-Zoot Sims Sextet, From A to Z (RCA Victor)
Jonathan Harvey, Speakings (Aeon)
Vinicius Cantuária & Bill Frisell, Lágrimas Mexicanas (eOne)
