It's about time. On February 28 mighty Australian instrumental trio the Dirty Three will release Toward the Low Sun (Drag City), their first new album in almost seven years. The group's members have stayed busy, particularly violinist Warren Ellis, who's been an exceptional sidekick to Nick Cave in the Bad Seeds and Grinderman (to say nothing of their collaborative soundtrack work). Drummer Jim White hasn't been sitting around either—an incredibly resourceful player, he's backed everyone from Nina Nastasia to Bill Callahan to Cat Power. Though guitarist Mick Turner hasn't been quite as active, he's still got it too.

"Rising Below" picks up where the Dirty Three left off on Cinder (Touch and Go). Turner sketches out the chord changes with knotty strumming and single-string tangles, White drives the action and drops in well-deployed accents and color, and Ellis spins dark, ever-evolving melodies with a frenzied lyric beauty.
