Not satisfied with lecturing Republicans on Sunday morning roundtables, David Axelrod has taken a position heading up a new Institute of Politics at the University of Chicago, the school announced today. The Institute will train students to "study and participate in civic life in Chicago and around the nation," and Lynn Sweet reports that it'll be modeled after a similar program in Harvard's Kennedy School for government.

For Axelrod, it's a homecoming—he graduated in 1976 before going on to a career in journalism, consulting, and eventually politics (a career he discussed at length with us when he was getting hot, back in 1991.) And it's another big get for the University of Chicago, making a south-side home for Obama's presidential library even more likely. But why couldn't they have gotten him, say, last year, when I was still a student there? My Facebook feed is filling up with pictures of friends of mine beaming next to the President's closest adviser.

There's a webcast at 2 PM CST to announce the job, and it features a roster of heavy hitters: Axelrod, Rahm, David Brooks (also an alum), Rachel Maddow, and George Stephanopolous will be discussing the 2012 race.
