On the road to SXSW

Right now I'm at a Denny's outside of Waco, Texas, on my way down to Austin for SXSW, which for years I've called "spring break for the music industry" but which after reading the Kid Mero's amazing writeup on the festival I shall now be referring to as "the Hipster Freaknik" (word to Danny Brown).

For those who have never been to SXSW and have somehow managed to avoid the reams of coverage it generates every year, it's commonly described as a "music festival"—implying some sort of stress-free jaunt where enjoying music is the ultimate goal—but the experience is in reality a grueling gauntlet of guest lists, status panic, and frustrating efforts to coordinate packs of musicians and journalists via a blizzard of texts and Twitter DMs, all complicated by endless cases of complimentary booze. This year I'll be doing double duty as a journalist and a performer, and between performances I'll be serving up news and (more important for SXSW) gossip here and on my Twitter.

If you have leads on hot performances, celebrity sightings, parties, or opportunities to nab free beer/food/sneakers/et cetera, hit me up at mraymer@chicagoreader.com or DM me.
