Today the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) announced the six composers participating in its annual ICElab program, which seeks to help young talents develop new work—musicians from the group maintain ongoing interactions with the composers and eventually perform the pieces that result. Of the six names, the only one I recognize is Anna Thorvaldsdottir, a fantastic Icelandic composer whose album Rhizoma (Innova) was one of my favorites last year. But given the way the work of previous years' participants has developed over time—they include Steve Lehman, Phyllis Chen, Chicagoan Marcos Balter, Mario Diaz de León, Tyshawn Sorey, and Carla Kihlstedt—I intend to keep the other five on my radar. Two of the composers from the 2012 program, Juan Pablo Carreño and Patricia Alessandrini, will premiere new works at ICE's May 26 concert at the MCA, on a program featuring two pieces by the great Greek composer Georges Aperghis.

Joining Thorvaldsdottir on the 2013 ICElab roster are the duo of Germany's Martin Hiendl and New York's Monica Duncan, British-Norwegian composer Sasha Siem, Brazil's Felipe Lara, Bulgaria's Maria Stankova, and Chicago's own Daniel R. Dehaan, who teaches at Columbia and works extensively with electronic music. I plan to get familiar with Dehaan's work ASAP, and I'm already looking forward to concerts by the others during ICE's 2012-'13 season at the MCA.
