I usually try to avoid making direct comparisons to well-known musicians when I write about a band, but for now I'd like to forget about that rule. Tampa postpunks Merchandise are getting some love these days, and drawing unavoidable comparisons to a beloved 80s group from the UK whose name starts with an "S" and ends with "miths."

Today's 12 O'Clock Track is "Time," from Merchandise's newest album, Children of Desire.

The grainy footage in the video for "Time" brings out the 80s flavor of the song (and of Merchandise). Similarities to the Smiths include Carson Cox's mournful vocals, but fortunately there's more to Merchandise than Moz worship—"Time" hints at the keyboard melodies that feature prominently in the group's music.

Take a gander at the video below; you can also head to Merchandise's website to grab all the band's albums. Merchandise plays in town Fri 9/28; e-mail ryannolenlowry@gmail.com for show info.
