I've been fascinated with emo for years, partly because of how the term devolved into a vaguely defined epithet at some time between Dashboard Confessional's MTV Unplugged 2.0 and My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade. In the past five years, plenty of underground punks have revisited emo's 90s salad days and used the sound of that era as a template to create exciting music, and lately it feels like every week there's a new group with its own spin on the old style.

That means a lot of new emo, and a lot of it is messy or just uninspired. But every once in a while I dig up some great songs—including today's 12 O'Clock Track, "Parked Cars" by Pittsburgh band Legs Like Tree Trunks.

Generally the four-piece piles up hyperactive, cycling guitar patterns, but "Parked Cars" is relatively calm and resplendent thanks to a restrained approach to the six-string melodies. The song is off Legs Like Tree Trunks' recent Future Reference EP, which is available as a pay-what-you-want download from Bandcamp.
