The Hideout's convivial Soup & Bread series doesn't begin until January 2, but on Wednesday, November 14, it'll warm up at the Garfield Park Conservatory at a special event featuring a dozen guest cooks making soups inspired by plants grown on the premises. Among those manning the soup stations: City Provisions' Cleetus Friedman will make something inspired by the beehives, Hoosier Mama Pie Co.'s Allison Stout will be working off the coconut palm, Mana Food Bar's Jill Barron was assigned the ginger plants, Susan Goss of West Town Tavern got the chocolate tree, and yours truly is awaiting a shipment of frozen fiddlehead ferns to simmer up something green and unseasonal. There will be live middle eastern music and other festive doings and Jason Hammel of Lula will be preparing a special Hailstone Soup recalling the June 2011 hailstorm that devastated the conservatory's glass roofs (see the full lineup here).

It starts at 6 PM and your $5 donation benefits the Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance and Breakthrough Urban Ministries. Bring your own teacup for maximally efficient souping.
