Update: All three Gavin Harrison events have been sold out. Attention drum nerds! Vic's Drum Shop (included in our last Best of Chicago issue) is offering you the chance to take a master class from UK progressive rock veteran Gavin Harrison. Harrison played with Porcupine Tree for years, but is probably best known for manning the kit for living legends King Crimson during their final run in the late aughts. The master classes are taking place on Wed 1/30 at 1 and 5 PM. Unlike a typical clinic, where the featured drummer performs onstage to a packed shop, these classes are limited to only ten seats each. Both ninety-minute sessions cost $75—not a big price to pay for learning from one of the prog scene's most accomplished.

Here's a video of Harrison performing on the Late Show during Letterman's "drum solo week" last year. His feel, technique, and clarity of tones are simply amazing. My favorite part is when he blows into a tube to fill this first floor tom with air, dramatically increasing the drum's pitch.

Interested in sitting in with Harrison? Call Vic's at 312-770-1200 or interact directly with the shop's staff on their Facebook page. If the master classes are out of your price range, Harrison will be doing a drum clinic at Cobra Lounge on the following night (Thu 1/31) at 7 PM. It's only $8 and open to all ages.
