- From Xavier Dolan's Laurence Anyways, which plays tomorrow
Starting tonight and continuing through the weekend, the Alliance Francaise
will present several recent French-language films from around the globe. The first selection, The Weight of the Oath
(aka Le Poids du Serpent
) comes from Burkina Faso; it screens tonight at 6:30 PM with the film's director, Daniel Sanou Kollo, in attendance. The event is free and open to the public, as is tomorrow night's Chicago premiere of Laurence Anyways
, the latest from the young Quebecois filmmaker Xavier Dolan (Heartbeats
). Based on descriptions, the film sounds like an ambitious undertaking for the 23-year-old writer-director: it runs 160 minutes and takes place over ten years. Time Out Chicago
's Hank Sartin will be present to introduce the film and lead a discussion afterwards.
The series continues on Saturday with three additional films: Grey Matter, a meta-movie from Rwanda; Toussaint Louverture, a Haiti-set historical epic made for French TV; and Mesnak, a Quebecois feature about an actor who reconnects with his indigenous roots. These screenings aren't free, but if you preorder tickets, you can see all three for a mere $10.
