Robert Pollard's made a name for himself with his nonstop musical output. Since 2008, he's released two solo records a year, and in 2012 he supplemented his annual pair with another three LPs he recorded with his on-again, off-again band Guided by Voices
, which itself is more or less a vehicle for his ideas. That alone is more output than most bands are able to create over the course of an entire career, let alone 365 days. It looks like 2013 is following a similar path. In April, GBV released another LP, English Little League
, and a couple of days ago Uncle Bob gave us a sneak peek off another upcoming solo LP, Honey Locust Honkey Tonk
. That song, "I Killed a Man Who Looks Like You," is today's 12 O'Clock Track
"I Killed a Man Who Looks Like You" takes a different approach from the lo-fi, indie-rock bombast that makes up a bulk of the Pollard catalog, instead going with a calmly paced, introspective vibe held down with thoughtful acoustic guitar strums and minimal drumming. What hasn't changed, and what will probably never change, is Pollard's incredible use of melody—there seems to be a hook hiding behind every possible corner of this track.
Honey Locust Honkey Tonk is set for release in July.
