Demonstrations continue in Istanbul, a protest sparked by but not limited to the central government's plan to level trees in the central Taksim square to build a shopping mall.

My second cousin Fabien Tepper happens to be on the scene, and she's posted this video footage on Vimeo. It ends when a water cannon blew the camera out of her hands.

"From my room in Cihangir, near where I took this footage," she reported Saturday on Facebook, "I just heard a shot fired, and the normally quiet neighborhood is now erupting with horns, whistles, car horns, and banging pots and pans."

Tepper is a freelance journalist, blogger, and artist whose most frequent focus is on animal rights and public policy.
