You may have been to a lot of barbecues this summer, but probably none can equal the Sound Opinions End of Summer BBQ. That's because you'll get to argue with professional music critics Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis in person—if your mouth's not too stuffed with eats from Smoque, Bang Bang Pie Shop, Black Dog Gelato, and the Butcher & Larder, and drinks from Goose Island. It all goes down at the WBEZ Community Room and Terrace on Navy Pier.
Garlic Fest, which takes place at Everts Park in Highland Park, is a food festival dedicated entirely to—you guessed it—garlic. Dishes include traditional fare like pasta, but also such unique items as garlic ice cream and garlic cupcakes.
The Northwest Chicago Film Society presents a screening the 1962 film The Intruder, one of the few social-issue movies directed by legendary producer Roger Corman. It stars a pre-Star Trek William Shatner as a bigot who goes to a small southern town in an attempt to stop racial integration.
