Chicago's new generation of hip-hop artists continues to draw on a wide range of influences. Here we have the new video for Martin $ky's "CritiCALI," a slippery bit of meditative psych-hop that borrows from the more progressive corners of the LA scene. The instrumental, from beat-scene fixture Mndsgn, is moody and dazed, dusted with the the grimy fuzz of smoggy sunshine. $ky, an 18-year-old from Flossmoor, is polished and imaginative, with a blunted but dexterous monotone. On "CritiCALI" he captains hovercrafts, slings "all-of-a-sudden flows," and brags about his "far from average anatomy."
The song was released in April, but last week it got the lyric-video treatment—and $ky took the opportunity to remind everybody about his new mixtape, Time(less), which drops in September. Given how good his taste is, I can't help but look forward to that. Watch the video after the jump, plus a few other tracks to get you caught up.
