Old Jews Telling Jokes
Looking for something to do today? Agenda’s got you covered.

Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth fame takes the stage at the Museum of Contemporary Art, but now it's with her new act: Body/Head. She and guitarist Bill Nace just released their debut album, Coming Apart, which the Reader's Peter Margasak calls "seriously committed music that seizes fleeting sounds and gives them staggering weight." Gate—the solo project of Michael Morley of the Dead C—opens the show with a performance alongside Tom Carter of Charalambides.

Old Jews Telling Jokes—it's just like how it sounds. Former New York Times public editor Daniel Okrent and former Random House Studio president Peter Gethers cowrote the spiel, which makes jokes into miniplays featuring the same five actors; nods to Jewish comedians also dot the show. One of our theater recommendations for fall.

The Columbia College symposium Black Vocality: Cultural Memories, Identities and Practices of African-American Singing Styles kicks off a two-day run today, exploring the singing voice's role in black culture. Performers include Pamela Z, Mankwe Ndosi, Fabrizia Barresi, Bobbi Wilsyn, and Maggie Brown.
