Danny Brown's Old debuted on Spotify yesterday (read Leor Galil's review), and it's the only thing I've listened to for the past 24 hours. But since we've already featured Brown on 12 O'Clock Track so many times, I figured I'd shine the spotlight on one of the album's producers. The beats on the second half of Old are phenomenal, a mixture of Swizz Beatz and Lex Luger's skeletal, metallic crunk, hyphy's purple purview, and dubstep's titanic lurch. Three of those beats are produced by Glaswegian electronic artist Rustieā€”I wrote a preview capsule of his set for this past summer's Pitchfork Music Festival. But for a taste of what side two of Old sounds like, check out "City Star," the track that's most reflective of Rustie's contributions to Brown's full-length. It would be little more than a copy of a Lex Luger beat, except Rustie supplants Luger's jackhammer snare rolls and horror-film synths with drums straight out of Sonic the Hedgehog and keyboards that would fit just as well in an anime cartoon as they do in this drugged-out instrumental. Buy both Rustie's Glass Swords, which "City Star" is on and is out now, and Old when it drops October 8th on Fool's Gold.
