Singer-songwriter Valerie June performs at Schubas. The Reader's Peter Margasak praises her music, saying it "conflates old-school soul, old-time folk, and Delta blues, and her powerful voice, slightly sharp-edged but with a rounded enunciation, takes center stage and holds it."
New Jersey duo Dads play Beat Kitchen. On last year's album American Radass (This Is Important), the Reader's Leor Galil says "they evoke the wistfulness and existential dread of reaching adulthood by adapting sloppy 90s midwestern emo, turning it into something fierce and sprightly that sounds messier than it is." Drug Church, Mountains for Clouds, and Droughts open.
According to the Reader's Miles Raymer, Mount Kimbie possesses "the rare ability to translate the sounds and rhythms of electronic dance music into a pop idiom without sacrificing the hypnotic quality that makes them feel like dance music in the first place." The group performs at Lincoln Hall tonight. Jonwayne and D33J open.
