If you're entering the Reader's pure fiction contest and if you're a suck-up, head down to Reading Under the Influence, where the issue's guest curator, Barrie Jean Borich (author of Body Geographic), will be reading. Matt David (contributor to Art Nerd Chicago), Mason Johnson (author of Sad Robot Stories), and RUI regular Ashley Keenan will also be on hand. This month's theme is "deferment."
Brothers Ron and Russell Mael, aka Sparks, take the stage at Lincoln Hall tonight and tomorrow. The duo is performing without a backing band—as Kevin Warwick says, it'll be "just the two of them on keyboards and vocals . . . acting out their yin and yang, Russell the glitzy front man and Ron the severe, straitlaced puppet master." Tonight's show is 18+, tomorrow's is 21+.
M, Joseph Losey's 1951 remake of the Fritz Lang thriller, follows the hunt for a man who kills children; the screening is at Patio Theater. One of our movie recommendations for fall.
