Trey Radel, the Republican congressman from Florida and self-described "hip-hop conservative," is in the news: buying cocaine from an undercover cop on Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C., pleading guilty to possession, being sentenced to a year of probation, and taking a leave of absence from his office.
"I'm owning up to my actions," he said after he was sentenced. He called his substance abuse issues a "disease." He's entering rehab.
Unremarked in coverage I've seen of Radel is the local angle. He went to Loyola University here and took improv classes at Second City. He met Rachel Dratch. Then he moved away. It's a very close call, and maybe he just barely gets over the bar, but our town has always been generous in who it puts its arms around. In my view, Radel makes the cut as "Chicago's own."
