More fun with numbers in journalism

Math is hard.

I took a swipe at the profession this week, complaining in my column that "too many journalists are numerically illiterate." But all I had to back that up was one example.

So here's another.

From the January 1 Tribune:

"Thirty-three officers were killed by gunfire, the lowest number since 1887, when the country's population was more than four times smaller than it is today."

I'm guessing this means one-quarter the current size. If the population then was 100 percent smaller than it is today the country would have been uninhabited. Four hundred percent . . . ?
