Inspired by the memoirs of burlesque performer Gypsy Rose Lee, Gypsy follows the ins and outs of showbiz through the eyes of "Madame Rose" Hovick. Reader contributor Albert Williams writes, "Gary Griffin's superb stripped-down staging of the work rests squarely on the shoulders of Louise Pitre's fierce, flinty performance." Check it out tonight at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater.
Tonight the Museum of Contemporary Art is screening Guy-Marc Hinant and Dominique Lohlé's documentary Whisky Time: A Portrait of Charlemagne Palestine. The film captures a series of conversations between the artist and the filmmakers on various days at 5:30 PM, the exact time Palestine pours himself a glass of whiskey every day.
Estrella Morente, daughter of flamenco iconoclast Enrique Morente, carries on her father's musical legacy tonight at the Symphony Center. Peter Margasak writes in Soundboard, "for me Morente is at her best in more traditional settings, threading her voice through the stuttering palmas and forceful guitar of, say, 'Como la Corriente' or 'En un Sueño Viniste,' which features lead guitar by Vicente Amigo."
