The consensus among moms everywhere seems to be that American Idol has had a couple down years. (Most seem to prefer The Voice these days.) Meanwhile, Windy City Gay Idol, in which Chicago's best amateur LGBTQ singers go head-to-head for the Gay Idol title (and a $5,000 prize package), is as strong as ever. The competition kicks off tonight at Sofo Tap and moves to a different venue each week before concluding in a final bout at the Mayne Stage later this summer.
CircEsteem's A Space Odyssey, an intergalactic-themed children's show, opens today at Alternatives, Inc. Watch Chicago's youngest circus-artists-in-training as they perform acrobatics, juggling, trapeze, and other big-top acts.
Eleventh Dream Day plays at the Hideout. For tonight's performance, the band will be playing ten new songs live before taking them to the recording studio for the follow-up to 2011's Riot Now! (Thrill Jockey), which Bill Meyer says is " their best album since the mid-90s." Nick Tremulis opens.
