To Be Takei

Looking for something to do today? Agenda's got you covered.

George Takei is more than Sulu from Star Trek. Since coming out in 2005, he's become an ardent proponent of marriage equality and gay rights, a lively public speaker quick to take down racial stereotypes, and something of a Twitter hero (his feed is seriously hilarious). In the documentary To Be Takei, playing tonight at Gene Siskel Film Center, director Jennifer M. Kroot chronicles these developments; the film screens as part of the Siskel's ongoing Asian American Showcase.

Local author Miles Harvey discusses How Long Will I Cry? Voices of Youth Violence, a book he cowrote with Chicago youths about the effects of gang activity, at the Chicago Temple, First United Methodist Church.

Music Garage hosts the second of three installments of Beats and Breaks Battles, a DJ and hip-hop producer battle hosted by the SAE Institute USA. Think of it as a rap battle with beats instead of lyrics. Each aspiring producer is given three minutes to create an original, instrumental hip-hop track and move through head-to-head battles. Winners move on to compete in the national championship in Atlanta.
