But tonight at the Poetry Foundation, the man behind the CSO's popular Beyond the Score concerts will do what he does so well—telling the stories behind the music that can bring it all to life—for free, sans orchestra (except for recordings).
McBurney, a musician and composer himself, will be talking about a 20th-century trio of composers—Britten, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich. They all worked in the then-new, populist mediums of radio and film, and, McBurney says, sought to promote justice through their music. The three are the focus of the CSO's "Truth to Power" festival, which runs from May 22 through June 8.
You can catch McBurney's lecture, "Composing Truth to Power," at 7 PM, tonight, Tuesday, May 13, at the Poetry Foundation, 61 W. Superior. Also, at noon on Monday, May 19, at the University of Chicago's Gray Center, 929 E. 60th.
