Sheriff Dart comes to the Hideout on Tuesday!

Sheriff Tom Dart joins Mick and Ben.
As part of our effort to bridge all geographical divisions, Mick and I will be bringing Sheriff Tom Dart—a politician from the southwest side—to our First Tuesdays show at the Hideout, a bar on the north side.

To make the sheriff feel more at home, we'll ban anyone from talking about the Cubs at the show, which is this Tuesday.

Plus, I'm going to leave my medical marijuana at home. Well, he is the sheriff!

All kidding aside . . .

I have a feeling Dart will be pretty popular with the Hideout bunch—north-siders though they are—as he's a fairly likeable politician whose name is not Rahm Emanuel.

In fact, I'm sure one of the first questions anyone will ask is, "Hey, sheriff, why aren't you running for mayor?"

On hand to help us with the many criminal justice issues will be Rummana Hussain, ace criminal courts reporter for the Sun-Times.

This is a woman whose job requires her to regularly cover the trials of some of the nastiest, most violently dangerous miscreants in all of Chicago.

I'm thinking of drafting her to run for mayor. I know she won't be scared of Rahm.

There's a lot to talk about. As Dart's frequently pointed out, the jail houses up to 3,000 prisoners who have been diagnosed with mental health illnesses.

That makes it "the largest mental health facility in the country," Dart says.

So right off the bat, we'll want to know if there's a saner, more compassionate way to deal with the mentally ill.

Which may or may not lead to a discussion about how Mayor Emanuel closed those neighborhood mental health clinics in the name of budget reform.

There will undoubtedly be some questions about the Michael Brown murder in Ferguson.

Plus, we'll be asking about mandatory sentencing for gun possession—pro or con?

And, of course, what impact legalizing marijuana would have on the county jail.

And a whole lot of other stuff as time permits. The show starts at 6:30 PM. It's $5 at the door. And the Hideout is at 1354 W. Wabansia.

See you there!
