"People have dreams," sings Venus Laurel on "Starry B," buoyed by horns and the voices of her bandmates. The song's melodies hang serenely over Corey McCafferty's tense knots of drums. The new single from Moritat's forthcoming EP High Plus Tight could either clench tighter or drift away entirely as it unfolds, but the song does neither—the percussion eggs on the singers while the brass smooths over the drums. The band carve out a calm, jazzy hollow as refuge from looming stress.

"Starry B" is the second song to see release from Moritat's new record. It follows "Visits," a bass-and-synth-heavy number that sustains the same dichotomy: tight rhythms, loose melodies. High Plus Tight will see release on January 20, while Moritat headline the Empty Bottle tonight at 9 PM.
