The band currently billed as Slayer plays the Venue at Horseshoe Casino on Saturday, one night after Styx plays the very same room. No offense to Styx or casinos, both of which I've enjoyed in small doses, but why is Slayer playing a casino in northwest Indiana instead of within city limits?
Even if Tom Araya and Kerry King are all that remain of the original and best version of the band (guitarist Jeff Hanneman died last year and drummer Dave Lombardo left a few months earlier), did no venue in Chicago want to book half of one of the greatest metal bands of all time? Reader music editor Philip Montoro pointed out to me that new guitarist Gary Holt and drummer Paul Bostaph are no slouches—both played in Exodus (who open this show) and the latter was Slayer's drummer when Lombardo left in the 90s—but he did sigh in agreement when I remarked to him how odd it is that Slayer are playing the Horseshoe. For today's 12 O'Clock Track here's "Dead Skin Mask" from 1990's Seasons in the Abyss, my favorite Slayer album. It's an ideal song to listen to on a Tuesday afternoon, or any other time you feel like throwing your furniture.
