In 2011, writer Phillip Mlynar wrote a B Side feature about Verbal Kent right around the time the Rogers Park rapper released his sixth album, Save Yourself (Rapmechanics). Kent has release a couple albums since then on the consistently noteworthy underground hip-hop label Mello Music Group, and is now gearing up to release his next album for the imprint, Anesthesia, on September 11. Judging by the first single, "Suitcase Switch," it looks like an album worth checking out. On this track, Freddie Gibbs and Kent each drop verses that swing, suddenly change speed, and carry plenty of attitude; producer Apollo Brown laces their verses with a scorching organ loop, drop-kicking drums, and spliced-up soul-singing samples. It's today's 12 O'Clock Track—listen to it below.
