Chicago four-piece Dim headline tomorrow night's Jaye Jayle show at the Burlington, and their self-released, self-titled tape is hands-down my favorite local record of the year. Combining the spaced-out tones of Failure and the hazy whammy-bar abuse of My Bloody Valentine, Dim hammer out beautiful, shoegazey epics crammed into two-minute running times. On today's 12 O'Clock Track, "Once Again," the band push forward, the plodding drums aided by clicky loops and electronics while dizzying, swirling feedback overwhelms the mix. It's grim and pretty at the same time, and now that bands such as Nothing and Cheatahs are bringing the sounds of shoegaze and space rock back, newcomers Dim have the potential to become the best of the bunch.
