The Horace Mann Marching Mustangs march to the beat of their drums Wed 12/20.
There's plenty to do this week before the holidays hit like a ton of yule logs. Here's some of what we recommend:
Mon 12/18: Red Lobster Comedy
aspires to more than providing stage time at L&L Tavern (3207 N. Clark) for unfiltered, odd stand-up comics. A cabal of 34 producers serve hot dogs and have sent a cease-and-desist letter to Red Lobster for infringing on their "brand." 9:30 PM, free
Join Melania Trump (played by actress and writer Erin Diamond) for one last Christmas: By Melania
at Uptown Underground (4707 N. Broadway). It's a throwback to chintzy TV Christmas specials the kind emceed by Bob Hope or the Osmonds during the 1970s and '80s. 8 PM, $15
Punk rockers Daymaker prove they're not to be overlooked at their Empty Bottle show Tue 12/19.
Tue 12/19: Daymaker
's sloppy punk starts a mosh pit at the Empty Bottle (1035 N. Western). The Reader
's Noah Berlatsky writes, "[Erin] Daymaker’s a bit of a mess and a bit of a known quantity—snotty punk rawk bands are scattered across the midwest as liberally as abandoned industrial plants—but Delaney’s pissed-off charisma oozes from the recording, and the band embraces its underdog status with winningly mean-spirited resolve." 8:30 PM, $7
The kids at Horace Mann Elementary School (8050 S. Chappel) in South Chicago are trying to raise money for more instruments and supplies for their school band, the Marching Mustangs. Their winter concert
trumpets their marching band with what instruments they do have. 4 PM, $3 suggested donation, $5 includes raffle ticket
Wed 12/20: Trivia Mafia
, a new weekly quiz night at North Bar (1637 W. North), offers cheap drinks, popcorn, pizza, and questions from WBEZ's Amy Wielunski. Also you can catch some cool bands and comedy acts after the trivia. 7 PM, free
Thu 12/21-Sat 12/23:
Courtesy of Lincoln Lodge
Comedy chestnuts roast on an open fez at the Lincoln Lodge's Christmas Feztacular Thu 12/21-Sat 12/23.
The Lincoln Lodge, one of Chicago's finest independent stand-up collectives, ho-ho-hosts Christmas Feztacular
, three evenings of cheery comics, yuletide tunes, and holiday-inspired dance numbers. Stick around after (Thu and Fri only) for music and more holiday happiness. The show takes place at Under the Gun (956 W. Newport). 8 PM, $25
, Peter Drake captures stills from TV's idyllic portrayal of suburban life in the 1950s (Leave it to Beaver
and such) through illustrations both color and black and white. All artwork is on display at Linda Warren Gallery (327 N. Aberdeen). Tue-Sat, 11 AM-5 PM, free
