Guess who’s coming to play at Taste of Chicago this year?

Earlier today the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events announced the full lineup for the 39th annual Taste of Chicago. This year's big headliners include the Flaming Lips, Juanes, Black Star (aka Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli), and George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic. Those last two are particularly notable: last week Clinton said he'd retire from touring in 2019, and Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) announced his retirement in 2016, though obviously it didn't stick.

Headliners play at the Petrillo Music Shell in Grant Park, which sells tickets in two tiers—general seating for $18, premium spots for $50. Of course, you can still camp out on the lawn for free, and you might even get a better view of the Flaming Lips' spectacle from a little further back. The Lips like edible gimmickry—in 2011 they famously packaged music on USB sticks embedded in gummy candy skulls and fetuses, and just last month they collaborated with Dogfish Head on a beer called Dragons & YumYums. But even though this is the Taste, I don't expect them to bring any of that stuff—I'm not sure gummies keep for seven years anyway.

Taste of Chicago also announced the lineup for its all-local Bud Light Stage, roughly half a mile south of Petrillo on the corner of Balbo and Columbus. Among the highlights are rapper and educator Matt Muse, art-pop singer and producer Fee Lion, and Chicago festival regulars Archie Powell & the Exports. The big shows at Petrillo feature some great locals too, including heartstring-pulling singer-songwriter Half Gringa, hard-working rapper the Boy Illinois, and R&B wonder BJ the Chicago Kid.
