1,000 Times Good Night

117 minutes 2014

Juliette Binoche stars as a war-zone photojournalist torn between her work, which brings her in close proximity with the most oppressed people in the world, and her family, who live in constant fear that she won't come home. This potent Norwegian drama by Erik Poppe, himself a veteran war photographer, opens with a gripping sequence in which the woman accompanies a jihadist suicide bomber on a fateful mission, and she's haunted afterward by her complicity in the attack. For some reason Poppe chooses to end the movie with a nearly identical sequence, which makes little emotional and even less logical sense. But this botched ending hardly detracts from the central story, which takes place at home and, drawing on his own experiences, traces the various stresses within the family. With Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
