24 Exposures

2014

Joe Swanberg's latest portrait of hipster unrest centers on a pompous photographer (horror director Adam Wingard) who specializes in naked women made up to look like corpses. When a model is found murdered on a crime scene resembling one of his shots, he arouses the suspicion—and, increasingly, the envy—of a lonely police detective. Swanberg depicts the investigation only sporadically, focusing instead on the photographer's struggle not to cheat on his girlfriend with his models; some half-baked ideas about representation versus reality emerge in the lax improvised dialogue that has become the director's trademark. Swanberg claims to have taken inspiration from the soft-core porno thrillers that premiered on late-night cable throughout the 1990s, which may explain why the prurient sex scenes show greater finesse than those of his other movies.
