2x4: The Still Image and the Moving Picture

I liked most of these ten works, selected by curator Zachary Hall to complement an exhibit of two-dimensional artworks. Inna-Marie Strazhnik's Picture Yourself Here (2002), a dense collage of travel ads and amateur vacation footage, points out how distanced today's tourist is from authentic experience; Jihyun Song's Earth (2003), with its varied animated textures of clay, sand, and dirt, creates a sensual, restorative effect. Karen Johannesen's abstract Reflective Material Film (2002) includes compelling evocations of deep cathedrallike spaces, while Ryan Kortman's Disgeyser (200) uses asynchronous sound to evoke alienation from nature, as images of “geysers” created by gunshots aimed at the surface of a pond are paired with screams. 63 min.
