30% Chance of Hailey Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Tuesdays. Continues through March 2 2010

This being a one-woman sketch show, your chance of Lyndsay Hailey is actually more like 100 percent. But that turns out to be the right amount: this is one of the best, most inventive solo productions in years. Unlike many local comedians, Hailey demonstrates nuanced acting ability, particularly in an antebellum scene in which she pines for her lover. She's got a solid command of verbal and physical comedic skills. (A former gymnast, she flaunts her chops in a parody of floor routines.) Her creative daring is apparent in totally unpredictable sketches; she can even sing. The bits here have loosely to do with the experiences that led her to move to Chicago to train in comedy. She says one pivotal moment was getting drunk and bombing at a stand-up showcase; later, she gives a perfectly painful reenactment. She also throws in some bizarre bits about female sexuality, including a pirate chantey celebrating testicles. --Ryan Hubbard
