49 Days

Hoping to start an herbal medicine business, an entrepreneur leaves his wife and young daughter for an extended stay in a distant town, and what begins as an engrossing drama morphs into a ghost story that borrows heavily from M. Night Shyamalan. Directors Lam Kin-lung and Tsui Siu-ming maintain a brisk pace and conjure up some creepy atmospherics, but this 2006 Hong Kong feature is undermined by half-baked metaphysical musings and numerous plot holes. The title refers to the Buddhist belief that a person is reincarnated 49 days after his death. With Stephen Fung and Gillian Chung. In Cantonese with subtitles. 93 min.
