500 Clown Frankenstein The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 18 2012

A copy of Frankenstein gets ripped to shreds at one point in this visceral, comic 500 Clown show, first performed about a decade ago—and that's pretty representative of how Mary Shelley's 1818 novel gets treated overall. But I'm not complaining. Director Adrian Danzig leads his clowns (think commedia, not circus) in an emotionally freewheeling, physically outrageous riff that, even if it doesn't have much to say about the source material, nevertheless plumbs the depths of spectacle and storytelling. Five actors will share the three roles over the course of the run, in what the director's note claims is a rich and risky exploration of the nature of character. Eh, maybe. In any event, the arrangement provides a good excuse to see the production more than once. —Keith Griffith
