Taqueria Ricardo 4429 W. Diversey 773-292-0400 One of Chicago’s food secrets is that many Latino supermercados have an authentic Mexican restaurant hidden inside. Usually it’s just a taco grill or a cafeteria line of guisados (stews)—but then there’s Taqueria Ricardo, attached to a grocery store of the same name on Diversey near Kostner.

Joong Boo Market Snack Corner 3333 N. Kimball 774-478-5566 joongboomarket.com On Kimball just north of where the Kennedy and the Blue Line cross Belmont you’ll find Joong Boo, primarily an Asian grocery—bigger than a market, smaller than a supermarket—that can satisfy most of your weekly shopping needs. In addition to a wide selection of dry goods (including plenty of novel cookies and chips) and a decent produce section, it has a butcher, a fishmonger, and a large kitchenware annex.

Zaytune Mediterranean Grill 3129 S. Morgan 773-254-6300 zaytunegrill.com Until Kendall grad Daniel Sarkiss opened this counter-service joint, Bridgeport was probably the last place you’d dream of finding authentic Middle Eastern food. While you’ll see no Iraqi sheep’s head, trotters, or stomach stew specials, and Sarkiss griddles his shawarma instead of spinning it on a trompo, the attention to detail and complexity of nearly everything he does—from the house-made pita to the light, fluffy, freshly fried falafel, from to the herbed fries with kalamata aioli to the big, meaty salads and grilled meat platters—rivals and even exceeds older and more venerable spots in ethnic enclaves like Albany Park and Bridgeview.
