Mara Shalhoup | Chicago Reader
I've been the Editor of the Reader since March 2011. Before that, I filled my time with cocaine, hip-hop, and organized crime (see BMF: The Rise and Fall of Big Meech and the Black Mafia Family, St. Martin's Press, 2010) while managing to edit the Reader's sister publication in Atlanta. Back in my muckraking days, I won a Clarion Award for my portrayal of a teenage prostitute turned triple murderer; two Livingston Award nominations, including one for my reporting on the displacement of low-income families from public housing; and the dubious honor of being told I did "a great job being an asshole."
