A Big Lebowski Christmas Musical: It's A Wonderful Life, Dude | Stage 773 | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader

A Big Lebowski Christmas Musical: It's A Wonderful Life, Dude Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Saturdays. Continues through Dec. 29 2012

The concept is intriguing: take two complex, endlessly watchable classics—It's a Wonderful Life and The Big Lebowski—and mash them up in a rock musical. But, oh, how the results disappoint. Maybe it was too much to hope for some critical illumination when the Dude, who's bound by nothing, gets thrust into the plotline identified with George Bailey, a man enslaved by his emotional and financial debts. But even a decent impression would've sufficed. Instead we get Josh Philo's pinched, angry Dude. Writer/director Randy Smock does find one rich piece of resonance in this mess from Is This Your Homework Productions: both movies' villains are crabby, wheelchair-bound millionaires. A similarity that I'd never noticed but won't soon forget. —Keith Griffith
